Ba Manzi's Tomb

Ba Manzi’s Tomb commemorates a semi-legendary general of the ancient Ba kingdom, said to have taken his own life during the Warring States period rather than allow his homeland to cede three cities in exchange for military help. According to the story, the king who received his severed head was so moved by his loyalty that he had it buried with full honors — and Ba’s own kingdom buried his body with equal ceremony, giving rise to a site still known locally as “the General’s Grave.”

The current tomb structure dates to a 1922 reconstruction, and the site has recently been upgraded with a new dedicated exhibition hall covering roughly 900 square meters, along with a small gift shop and reception area. It sits just a few minutes’ walk from Tongyuan Gate, making the two easy to combine into one stop for anyone interested in Chongqing’s older, pre-modern history.

It’s a minor, niche site rather than a major landmark, but a worthwhile detour if you’re already exploring the old city wall area — and one of the few places in the city connecting directly to Chongqing’s ancient, pre-Ming history rather than its wartime or contemporary story.
