Yikeshu Viewing Platform

Yikeshu — literally “One Tree” — is widely considered the single best spot in Chongqing to take in the city’s famous night skyline. Set on a hillside terrace in the Nanshan scenic area, roughly 500 meters above sea level and directly across the river from Yuzhong peninsula, the platform looks out over both rivers and the full sweep of the downtown skyline lighting up after dark. Chongqing’s night view is often ranked among the best in the world, and this is generally regarded as its finest vantage point.

The site takes its name from a large, century-old banyan (huangge) tree still growing at its center — Chongqing’s official city tree, chosen as the platform’s namesake when it first opened in 1997. The main viewing area includes an open 600-square-meter platform plus a six-story observation pavilion added in 2002, with space for several hundred visitors at once, along with a viewing lift for easier access. Arriving in the early evening, before sunset, is the usual advice — it lets you watch the transition from daylight to the full lit-up skyline in one sitting.

Entry costs around 30 RMB and is best booked in advance during peak times. It’s often paired with a wider visit to the surrounding Nanshan Botanical Garden, since the viewing platform sits within the same park grounds.
